Classes & Workshops

I have taught dance and conditioning classes internationally while working with Battery Dance Company, at the Frank Sinatra School of the Arts in NYC, at the Millbrook School, and as a visiting artist at Marlboro College, among other places. I have also worked with non-dancers to increase range of motion, strength, and flexibility - particularly with photographers, cyclists, bartenders, and people who spend long hours at a computer.

I currently teach advanced ballet, flexibility & conditioning, beginning aerial silks, and beginning lyra at Brooklyn AirSpace, and am available for private lessons and group workshops.

Contemporary Dance

Kyla's unique style is a combination of her martial arts practice (Tai Chi, Ba Gua, 2nd degree black belt in Shao Lin Kung Fu) with clean ballet technique transferred to her from her teachers Richard Thomas, Daniel Levans, and Christine Sarry, along with strong influences from Dunham Technique, Elisa Monte, and Abel Costa. Class begins with a warmup that focuses on first articulating, isolating, strengthening, and then connecting all parts of the body. Special attention is given to exploring skeletal alignment while the body is in motion. Class ends with a movement phrase from Kyla's repertory.

Body Conditioning & Flexibility

Kyla teaches private and group classes to people of all athletic backgrounds looking to alleviate pain and stiffness from activities such as running, cycling, carrying heavy objects, or sitting long hours at a computer. These classes are an amalgamum of her martial arts and dance training with exercises designed to help people gain strength, flexibility, and improved alignment. Structured for the busy professional, custom classes are available in durations from 10-90 minutes, and provide methods for allieviating stress and reinvigorating the body and mind while strengthening the core muscles, increasing flexibility, and improving posture.

Wednesdays 6:30-7:30pm at Brooklyn AirSpace

Improvisation

Kyla has extensive experience with dance improvisation through her work with White Wave Young Soon Kim Dance Company - where improvisation is a key element in the creative process - with dancers/choreographers Abel Costa and Gisela Quinteros, and in projects #TweetDance and The Process. The mind-body connections required for improvisation are very different from those used for learning and performing choreographed movement. In the dance improvisation class, prompts and rules are used to help students explore movement in a spontaneous but thoughtful way.
